Stone Torch, 1987

Stone Torch belongs to a period when I was moving away from the largely monochromatic stone and steel of my earlier work and experimenting more freely with color and expressive surface. Influenced in part by my pastel drawings, I applied color to both steel and stone, introducing a more painterly quality to the sculpture.

Unlike much of my earlier work, where stone carried considerable visual and physical weight, here it plays a minor role, primarily as a base and crowning element. The painted steel becomes the dominant, upward-moving form, while the title Stone Torch reinforces its vertical, flame-like presence.
