Table Trough was created as a scale model for Trough, the large-scale public sculpture commissioned for Billings, Montana, and completed in 1982. The model explores the relationship between massive granite slabs and flowing, bent-steel elements that connect and support them. While rooted in the structural concerns of my tensegrity, or Brute Series, the steel takes on a more fluid, gestural character.
The model became the conceptual and structural basis for the full-scale Trough. In both, the weight of the granite and the force of gravity are channeled through the curved steel. Enlarged to an architectural scale in Billings, these relationships became a public sculpture that viewers could physically move around and through.
