1991. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 32 × 29 × 20 in (81 × 74 × 51 cm). Disassemble and parts used in other works.

Upshot, 1991

Upshot is the first in a series exploring the expressive possibilities of a sweeping steel arc combined with rough, found stone. The arc lifts and activates the granite, continuing my interest in using metal to “choreograph” heavy, earthbound stone through balance, gravity, and implied movement.

The title comes directly from the upward gesture of the steel arc. Its rising sweep gives the sculpture a sense of thrust and direction, transforming the considerable weight of the granite into something that appears poised for movement.
