March 1990. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 8 × 3 × 3 ft. Corp Collection - MCI headquarters, Crystal City, VA
Vas grew from my increasing interest in the vessel as both sculptural form and metaphor. A tall granite element rises vertically while the broad vessel above creates a strong horizontal counterpoint, continuing my exploration of balancing the weight of stone with the structural possibilities of metal.
The work was commissioned for the MCI corporate headquarters in Crystal City, Virginia. This photograph shows the sculpture during the studio mock-up stage: the broad vessel is a cardboard template that was later cast in bronze, as were the steel elements forming the anchoring base.
