Vela III continues my interest in tools and implements and in their “raw, efficient beauty of form dictated by function.” The sculpture incorporates a section of a large lifting hook, combining its powerful industrial shape with rough granite. The steel lifts and animates the heavy stone, reflecting my continuing interest in “choreographing” traditionally earthbound material.
The title Vela, Latin for “sails,” refers to the southern constellation representing the sails of Argo Navis. In my continuing effort to make heavy objects appear light, the billowing shape and elevated position of the stone suggest a sail caught by the wind.
Part of the steel lifting hook was later used in Arabesque (T-01-20).
