January 1999. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 13.5 × 12 × 3 in (34 × 30 × 8 cm). Private Collection.

Vela IV brings together two recurring interests in my work: tools and celestial imagery. The serrated steel form suggests a saw or cutting tool, reflecting my fascination with tools as extensions of the hand and symbols of human ingenuity and action. The granite balanced above creates a tension between natural and human-made materials, weight and equilibrium.

The title Vela comes from the southern constellation Vela, Latin for “sails.” The sail suggests navigation, movement, and journey, while the upward-reaching stone gives the sculpture a sense of propulsion and reflects my recurring interest in making heavy objects appear light.
