February 1988. Pink granite, painted steel, 93 × 22 ×17”. Private collection - Baltimore, MD
Vessel II (Emerald Column) was the second in my ongoing Vessel Series, which grew from my earlier experience with ceramics and my interest in the container as both form and metaphor. The steel “container,” cut from a found section of pinched steel tube or pipe, rests atop the tall granite column, beginning an exploration of the vessel that would later expand into ideas of passage and journey.
The emerald color of the stone reflects my experiments with pastel drawing at the time. Those drawings encouraged me to move beyond the largely monochromatic stone and steel of my earlier work and use color as a more expressive element, here transforming the granite while retaining its rough-hewn character.
