September 1988. Granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 72 × 28 × 12 in (183 × 71 × 30 cm). Private Collection.
Vessel III, the third work in my ongoing Vessel Series, grew from my earlier experience in ceramics and my interest in the container as both form and metaphor. The broad steel “container” was cut from a found steel pipe elbow and balanced above a small piece of granite, transforming an industrial fragment into a vessel-like form. My use of vessels initially grew from my background as a production potter.
Here the vessel sits high above a slender steel column, giving the sculpture a sense of elevation and balance. The series marked the beginning of an idea that would become increasingly important in my work—the vessel as a metaphor for the self, journey, and passage.
