October 1988. Granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 79 × 26 × 10 in (201 × 66 × 25 cm). Private Collection.
Vessel VI the sixth work in my ongoing Vessel Series, grew from my earlier work in ceramics and my interest in the container as both form and metaphor. The steel “container,” cut from a found section of pinched steel tube or pipe, balances above the rough granite, continuing my transformation of industrial fragments into vessel-like forms. My use of vessels initially developed from my background as a production potter.
The painted surfaces reflect my experiments with pastel drawings at the time. Working in pastel encouraged me to introduce color into the largely monochromatic stone and steel of my sculpture, using muted, earthy tones that were also influenced by my experience with ceramic glazes.
