Wedge V, 1981

Wedge V extends the structural principles of my tensegrity, or Brute Series, into a tall, open framework. A wedge-shaped piece of granite is suspended high within long forged-steel bars, its weight becoming the active force that locks the elements together. The stone appears precariously elevated, yet the opposing forces of gravity, tension, and compression create a stable equilibrium—a static energy event held in arrested motion.

The elongated steel supports act as lines drawn in space, emphasizing the distance between the suspended stone and the ground. At the top, the forged bars wrap and interlock tightly around the granite, making the mechanics of assembly visible. The work brings together two recurring concerns in my sculpture: the physical interaction of stone and steel and the expressive possibilities of elevation, balance, and gravity.
