Wedge Column, 1981

Wedge Column extends the structural concerns of my tensegrity, or Brute Series, into a tall, attenuated vertical form. A wedge-shaped piece of granite is suspended high within long forged-steel rods that wrap and interlock around the stone. Gravity and the weight of the granite place the steel under tension, creating an interdependent structure in which the stone appears precariously elevated yet firmly held—a static energy event in arrested motion.

The forged-steel rods continue downward as long lines drawn in space, connecting the suspended stone to the base. At both top and bottom, the bars bend, cross, and weave around one another, making the forces holding the sculpture together visually explicit. The work combines the physical principles of my Brute Series with an increasing interest in verticality, elevation, and the expressive linear qualities of forged steel.
