August 1985. Pink granite, steel. Dimensions: 18 × 12 × 10 in.

Yaddo Sidewinder (Pink), 1985

Yaddo Sidewinder (Pink) continues my exploration of the Sidewinder Series, bringing stone and steel together through balance, leverage, and implied movement. A long slab of pink granite is poised against an arching section of solid steel anchored to a low rectangular base using taper pins, a fastening technique I frequently employed during this period. The spare construction emphasizes the physical relationship between the materials, while the leaning stone and curved steel create a sense of precarious, arrested motion.

Like all of my works with Yaddo in the title, the name refers to the Yaddo artists’ retreat in Saratoga Springs, New York, where I created the sculpture while a resident fellow during the summer of 1985. Pink simply refers to the color of the granite and distinguishes this work from Yaddo Sidewinder, created during the same residency.
