August 1985. Pink granite, steel. Dimensions: 28 × 26 × 12 in (71 × 66 × 30 cm).

Yaddo Sidewinder, 1985

Yaddo Sidewinder continues the Sidewinder Series, bringing contrasting granite forms into an active relationship through a sweeping arc of steel. The large stone rises precariously from a single point while the smaller stone anchors the opposite end, creating a sense of circular movement, tension, and balance. As in related works of this period, the visible steel pins and attachments remain an important part of the sculpture, making the means of connection both a structural and visual element.

The title Yaddo, like other works of mine bearing the name, refers to the Yaddo Artist retreat in Saratoga Springs, New York, where I created the sculpture while a resident fellow in the summer of 1985. It was exhibited in my 1986 solo exhibition at the George Ciscle Gallery in Baltimore and was later purchased from my Jersey City studio by Saul Dennison of Bernardsville, New Jersey.
