The Sculpture Garden and Studio are located on the site of a historic 19th century wood products mill which played a central role in the personal and economic lives of the local population of Wells, NY. The property — known as the Old Adirondack Lumber Co. — operated as a veneer mill, planing mill, and tannery across several decades, with the buildings constructed largely between the 1880s and 1930s.

John Van Alstine acquired the property in 1987 and has spent decades restoring the buildings and surrounding landscape, transforming the industrial complex into a working artist's studio, sculpture garden, and guest space while preserving its historic character.
