Recovered World Trade Center steel, weathering steel, granite, and stainless steel
Commissioned by Saratoga Arts in collaboration with the City of Saratoga Springs, New York.
Tempered by Memory (2011-12) was created in collaboration with sculptor Noah Savett as a memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Incorporating steel recovered from the fallen World Trade Center, the sculpture was conceived not as a literal monument to tragedy, but as a place of reflection, healing, and hope. Rather than altering the recovered steel, Van Alstine and Savett allowed the twisted forms created by the collapse to remain visible, preserving the material's powerful history while transforming it into a work of public art.
Following a year of public discussion and debate, the memorial found its permanent home in Saratoga Springs' historic High Rock Park, where its quiet setting between the city's renowned healing mineral springs reinforces the artists' vision of remembrance and renewal. Since its dedication on September 11, 2012, Tempered by Memory has served as the focal point for the city's annual September 11 commemorations, demonstrating how public art can transform a place of remembrance into one of resilience, community, and healing.

Working Scale Models - Van Alstine
These working models were built to help conceptualize the aesthetic and structural transition from the foundation up to the main elements.
We are not trying to exactly duplicate all the large WTC steel elements we will be working with on the final piece.
In addition to having a functional aspect, we also want these models to have an elegance and a visual strength to be stand alone works. These models are not made from WTC steel.
