Chalice II

Chalice I I is the 2nd work in my Chalice Series and grows from my longstanding interest in vessels and containers as sculptural forms and metaphors. My early background as a potter made the vessel part of my visual vocabulary, while its broader associations—with passage, the individual, or humanity moving through life—gave it metaphorical possibilities. Here, a large section of an aeronautical fuel tank is combined with granite and steel to create an exaggerated, upward-reaching chalice.

At more than ten feet high, the familiar idea of a cup or container is transformed through scale, industrial materials, and precarious balance. The work becomes a kind of “cup of life”—a vessel suggesting containment, passage, aspiration, and the human experience.

The stone split as a result of water freezing and expanding in the main hole that held the aluminum and was reworked twice with a new stones, final version Chalice V‍  was completed in 2013
