December 2013. Vermont granite, aluminum, bronze. Dimensions: 152 x 77 x 40 in. (386 x 196 x 102 cm).
Private Collection Virginia
Chalice V continues my Chalice Series and my longstanding interest in vessels and containers as sculptural forms and metaphors. Rooted partly in my early background as a potter, the vessel became a metaphor for passage—the individual or humanity moving through life. Here, a large aluminum aeronautical form balances point-to-point with a rough granite mass, creating an elongated chalice.
The sanded aluminum cup reflects the light and colors around it, subtly changing with its environment. Its luminous surface contrasts with the weight and permanence of the rough granite, bringing together lightness and mass, the human-made and the natural. Through its precarious balance, the familiar vessel becomes a spirited “cup of life,” suggesting passage and the human experience.
The piece re-uses the aluminum from Chalice II and the granite from Diagonal Tendencies II
