May 2000. Bronze, granite. Dimensions: 60 × 34 × 24 in (152 × 86 × 61 cm).

Corporate collection - Washington, DC

Flatbottom, 2000

Flatbottom combines black Pennsylvania granite and bronze, continuing my interest in bringing natural and human-made materials together. The curved bronze forms support and counter the tall granite slab, giving the heavy stone an unexpected sense of movement and balance.

The title is deliberately straightforward: Flatbottom simply refers to the flat bottom of the granite. The related drawings explore the same relationship between the upright stone and sweeping bronze forms with greater freedom and spontaneity.
