Nike, 1989

Nike continues my interest in combining raw granite with metal, here using bronze for its color and patina. The tall stone rises from a bronze base, while the sweeping bronze element above introduces movement and lightness, countering the granite’s weight and verticality.

The title refers to Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace. The wing-like bronze form and forward-leaning stone suggest a figure moving into space. Rather than depicting the figure literally, these elements bring a subtle figurative and mythological association to an otherwise abstract work.
