December 1994. Bronze, granite. Dimensions: 60 × 85 × 31 in (152 × 216 × 79 cm).

Private collection - Baltimore, MD

The Tiller series grows from my interest in tools and agricultural implements as extensions of the human body—objects that cultivate, shape, and engage the land. The title also evokes the tiller of a boat, a simple device used to steer and determine direction. Bringing these meanings together, the works explore the relationship between cultivation and navigation—our impulse both to shape the world around us and to chart a course through it.
